Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has reacted to criticism surrounding an expensive handbag reportedly spotted with his wife, Margaret, amid questions over his often-publicised modest lifestyle.
The handbag, which was said to be worth millions of naira, sparked reactions on social media, with some Nigerians questioning how the purchase aligns with Obi’s reputation for promoting prudence and modest living.
Reacting to the controversy in a recent interview, Obi said his wife has her own business and finances and is therefore entitled to spend her money as she chooses, provided public funds are not involved.
“My wife has her own business and money, so what is my own if she buys expensive items with her money? The bags and shoes my wife wears, I don’t even know how much they cost. As long as she doesn’t use public funds for it, it’s not a problem,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor has consistently campaigned on the need for prudent management of public resources, making his comments on the controversy a subject of further public discussion.
