The Acting Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Prof. Okechukwu Onochukwu, says the recent unrest on the university campus has been brought under control.
Onochukwu stated this when the Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Peters Nwagor, visited the institution on Thursday.
He clarified that there was no sporadic shooting during the incident, explaining that the shooting was targeted and that the affected student is receiving treatment at a hospital, with the bullets already removed.
He noted that the suspect involved had been arrested by security operatives and was currently undergoing interrogation.
The Vice Chancellor said no life was lost in the incident and warned students to stay away from crime and other criminal activities.
He also appealed to the Rivers State Government to construct additional perimeter fences around the university to strengthen security on campus.
Onochukwu further called for the provision of more classrooms and office quarters to address some of the institution’s infrastructural needs.
Responding, Nwagor assured the university management that the demands would be looked into, stressing the state government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of students on campus.
