The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has vowed to ensure that anyone caught rigging elections in Nigeria faces jail terms if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
Obi made the declaration on Wednesday during an NDC town hall meeting in Nasarawa State, where he addressed party supporters on electoral integrity and the need to strengthen the country’s electoral system.
Responding to a question on how the party would handle election rigging, the former Anambra State governor said the NDC would not allow electoral manipulation to go unchallenged in the next general election.
He said the party would resist attempts to rig the polls, assuring supporters that his administration would take steps to prevent electoral fraud.
Obi added that, if elected president, he would strengthen political parties and reform the electoral process to make election rigging impossible.
He also called for stricter laws on the qualifications of candidates seeking elective offices, arguing that aspirants should be required to demonstrate that they attended both primary and secondary schools.
According to him, the requirements should be clearly established and enforced under the law.
