The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja affirming the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election despite previously taking the presidential oath of office twice.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP described the judgment as being in line with the law and common sense, stressing that laws cannot be applied retroactively.
The party said the suit challenging Jonathan’s eligibility was unnecessary, vexatious, and an abuse of court process.
According to the PDP, the punitive cost awarded against the plaintiff would serve as a deterrent to individuals allegedly being used to undermine democracy through frivolous litigation.
The party further stated that the judgment, alongside the screening waiver earlier granted to Jonathan, had cleared the way for what it described as his “presidential rescue mission.”
The PDP noted that its primary election to select candidates for various positions is scheduled to hold on May 28, 2026.
