The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare sector, with a focus on ensuring residents have access to quality and affordable services.
In a statement issued on Tuesday to mark World Health Day, the governor said his government would continue to prioritise policies and programmes that enhance healthcare delivery across the state.
Fubara urged residents to take proactive steps toward maintaining their health by adopting healthy lifestyles, observing proper hygiene, and protecting themselves against preventable diseases. He also stressed the importance of community participation in promoting health awareness and supporting local health initiatives.
“On this World Health Day, I extend warm greetings to all Rivers people. Our administration is committed to improving healthcare in Rivers State, prioritising initiatives that promote quality healthcare for all,” the governor said.
Highlighting achievements since assuming office, Fubara noted that his administration has recruited over 2,000 health workers, revitalised several health facilities, and introduced a health insurance scheme aimed at expanding access to care. He added that the long-term goal is to position the state as a health tourism hub.
The governor also disclosed that previously abandoned health facilities, including zonal hospitals in Bori, Omoku, Ahoada, and Degema, have been revived and expanded, while 153 Primary Healthcare Centres have been remodelled to improve service delivery.
In addition, more than 400 staff of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital have received promotions, alongside the recruitment of 500 new personnel to boost manpower and efficiency.
Observed annually on April 7, World Health Day is a global health awareness event. The 2026 theme, “Together for Health: Stand with Science,” emphasises the role of scientific research, collaboration, and evidence-based solutions in advancing global health.
