The Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, says it will not join the planned nationwide Protest on August 1.
National Secretary of the Guild, Abubakar S. Yakubu in a statement on Monday, said the decision was reached after a crucial Congress meeting.
He said, “Rising from a crucial National Congress meeting of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, attended by over 20 state chapters from across the country, the congress has dissociated the Guild from the proposed national protest and demonstration from August 1, 2024.
The congress stated that Actors are ambassadors of peace, role models and mirror of the society and would not embark on street protest as we always use our movies as effective medium to demonstrate and protest
against economic, political and other ills in the society.
The congress noted that the nation is presently in critical situation that requires collective and unparalleled commitment, tenacity of purpose,
perseverance, patriotism and other exemplifying inclinations that would help propel political and economic growth.
The congress appealed to all members of the Guild nationwide not to participate in the proposed protest as it will disrupt the daily activities of hardworking Nigerians.
The congress recognized the right of peaceful protests devoid of violence but previous protests have always been marred by violence.
The congress firmly believes that through collective efforts Nigeria will no doubt be great again.
In the same vein, the National President of the Guild, Dr. Ejezie Emeka Rollas, MON, used the opportunity to announce the lifting of suspension placed on Adanma Luke, producer of the movie, “another side of life” production where star actor Jnr Pope and four other crew members lost their lives in Ananm river.
The President also lifted the ban placed on filming in riverine areas but cautioned members to always apply all safety standard measures recommended in the AGN Bylaws.
