Human Rights Lawyer, Henry Ekine has called on the Rivers State Government to provide alternative accommodation and compensation for displaced residents of demolished Iloabuchi waterfront in Diobu, Port Harcourt.
Ekine in a statement yesterday, described the demolition as illegal and a violation of the rights of residents of the area.
According to him, the failure of government to provide adequate mass Housing for residents is responsible for the existence of shanties.
He noted that housing is the right of citizens and government has failed to provide houses for its citizens.
He said it is unfortunate that after citizens struggle to provide accommodation for themselves, the government comes to pull them down without any form of compensation.
Meanwhile, some residents of the demolished waterfronts said they have been sleeping by the roadside.
Our correspondent who visited some streets along the Iloabuchi axis yesterday evening, confirmed the claim.
