The University of Port Harcourt has entered a crucial phase in the process of appointing its 10th Vice-Chancellor, following the opening and screening of applications by its Governing Council.
Head of Information, Publications and Public Relations, Dr. Sammy Kpenu in a statement said Council Chairman, Mao Arukwe Ohuabunwa at a formal session sealed applications submitted by prospective candidates were opened and reviewed.
He said the exercise led to the shortlisting of candidates who met the stipulated requirements for the position.
Out of the 14 applications received, 10 candidates were successfully shortlisted, underscoring what the Council described as a meticulous and transparent selection process.
The development comes as the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor, Owunari Abraham Georgewill, gradually winds down ahead of the scheduled handover on July 13, 2026.
The University commended the Governing Council for its diligence and integrity, expressing confidence that the ongoing process will produce a competent and visionary leader to advance the institution’s mandate.
