The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has confirmed that preliminary findings from its investigation into the gas seepage in Bille Community, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, reveal contamination of one of the community’s underground water sources.
Speaking during an assessment visit, the Commission’s Chief Executive, Mr. Gbenga Komolafe, represented by the Executive Commissioner for Health, Safety, Environment and Community, Mrs. Ejiro Eyesan, said the agency is undertaking a comprehensive scientific investigation to identify the exact source of the gas leak.
She noted that although initial investigations have been concluded, the Commission is carefully reviewing the findings to avoid triggering further environmental hazards before any remedial work begins. According to her, an international technical firm has been contracted to conduct detailed studies, with field investigations expected to commence before the end of July.
Eyesan added that specialists from various segments of the oil and gas industry have been mobilised to strengthen the investigation.
The Federal Government delegation also delivered relief materials to residents and pledged further interventions, including medical outreach programmes, medical supplies, clean water, firefighting equipment, and support for electricity supply.
In his response, Chairman of the Bille Council of Chiefs, Alabo Okpokia Dokubo, called on the government to ensure that its commitments translate into concrete and timely action for the affected community.
