President Bola Tinubu has urged state governments to accelerate the implementation of the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme to ensure Nigerians begin to experience measurable reductions in transportation costs from October 1.
Tinubu, in a State House press statement on Saturday, said the Federal Government would support states in expanding compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure and alternative-energy transport services.
The President recalled that he met with governors of the 36 states on August 27, where they agreed on the need to reduce transportation costs for Nigerians.
He said an implementation committee was subsequently established under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, chaired by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to coordinate the programme.
The President urged all states to work with transport unions and commercial operators, support vehicle conversions and fleet deployment, and facilitate the infrastructure required to ensure the benefits of cheaper energy translate into lower fares.
He said the Federal Government would continue to support the expansion of CNG infrastructure, increase conversion capacity and create an enabling environment for state governments, transport operators, manufacturers and private investors.
