President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on members of the All Progressives Congress to embrace unity, fairness, and sportsmanship as the party commences its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Thursday, President Tinubu described the commencement of the primaries as a historic moment for the ruling party, noting that the APC was entering its fourth election cycle since its formation.
According to him, the party was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, selflessness, and sacrifice, adding that these ideals had helped the party remain united through previous election cycles.
The President stated that the primaries, beginning with the House of Representatives contests and ending with the presidential primary on May 25, 2026, were not just exercises to elect candidates but also a test of the party’s unity, resilience, and strength.
Tinubu commended ongoing efforts by party leaders to adopt consensus arrangements in some contests, in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC constitution. He said the move would help reduce tension and promote harmony within the party.
“Where consensus fails, I urge us all to go into the primaries as brothers and sisters,” the President said, while calling on aspirants, delegates, and party members to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the exercise.
He warned against divisive politics and urged winners not to mock defeated opponents, while encouraging unsuccessful aspirants to remain loyal to the party and explore available appeal mechanisms.
“Our opponents are waiting for us to be against each other; we should disappoint them,” Tinubu stated.
The President also directed party leaders, governors, and stakeholders to ensure a fair and transparent process by providing all aspirants with a level playing field.
He further stressed the need for greater inclusion of women and youths in the party’s political process, urging delegates and leaders to give special consideration to the two demographics during the primaries.
Tinubu equally charged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to remain professional and avoid interfering in the internal democratic process of the party.
“Their duties strictly centre on ensuring peaceful exercise. Nothing more,” he said.
The President wished all aspirants and party members a successful outing and expressed optimism that the eventual candidates would lead the APC to victory in the general elections.
