President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerians to fulfil their tax obligations, stating that tax payments are crucial for funding infrastructure, healthcare, education, and welfare programmes for vulnerable citizens.
Speaking on Friday at the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, the president said many citizens demand improved public services while refusing to contribute through taxes.
According to him, sustainable development cannot be achieved without adequate revenue generation through taxation.Tinubu stated that citizens who fail to pay taxes, except those legally exempted, are not meeting their civic responsibilities.
The president also defended his administration’s economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market, describing the measures as painful but necessary to stabilise the economy. He said Nigeria could no longer continue policies that encouraged corruption, fuel smuggling and unsustainable spending.
