President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity across Nigeria, declaring that ongoing efforts to protect citizens and support vulnerable populations will not be derailed.
The President made the remarks on Sunday while hosting Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors at his Lagos residence to mark the Eid el-Fitr celebrations.
Tinubu said insecurity remains a major threat to national development and prosperity, stressing that his government is intensifying both local and international collaborations to address the challenge.
“The next phase of our struggle is the challenge of insecurity in the country. Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress, and prosperity,” he said.
He revealed that security cooperation featured prominently during his recent state visit to the United Kingdom, noting that discussions were held on equipment and operational support. The President added that he had also engaged Emmanuel Macron in further talks on security collaboration.
“I had a lengthy discussion with the French President. They are collaborating with us for equipment and support, and I am making efforts to reach other nations,” Tinubu stated.
The President and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu returned to Nigeria on Friday after a three-day state visit to the United Kingdom, where they were hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Tinubu also held talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during the visit.
Addressing economic concerns, Tinubu warned that the ongoing Middle East crisis could drive inflation and reduce purchasing power, urging state governments to introduce measures to cushion the impact, particularly on energy and transportation costs.
“We should care more for the vulnerable,” he said, noting that labour unions may demand additional support as global economic pressures mount.
He also called on governors to remain committed to policies that directly improve citizens’ livelihoods and to support efforts to combat criminality across the country.
Tinubu commended Vice President Shettima for his recent condolence visit to Borno State, assuring residents of enhanced protection through the deployment of modern security technology.
Speaking on behalf of the governors, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, congratulated the President on the successful UK visit and the strengthening of bilateral relations.
He noted that discussions on the establishment of state police are ongoing, adding that the forum would forward its recommendations to the National Assembly to facilitate a legislative framework.
The meeting was attended by governors from across the federation, alongside the Deputy Governor of Borno State
