The Southern Governors’ Forum (SGF) and the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council (SNTRC) have adopted a comprehensive seven-point security plan aimed at strengthening safety across the South. The resolutions were reached during their joint meeting held in Iperu-Remo, Ogun State, on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.
Security chiefs from the Nigerian Army, Police, DSS and NSCDC briefed the leaders on the security situation in the region, highlighting manpower shortages, equipment deficits and the need for improved intelligence coordination.
Following their review, the Forum resolved to create a Zonal Security Fund, with member states contributing to support regional security operations. It also approved monthly meetings of state security advisers to enhance coordination.
The meeting adopted a new intelligence-sharing framework supported by modern communication and surveillance technology to ensure real-time monitoring across states. Southern states are expected to jointly invest in equipment enabling cross-border communication.
Reiterating its longstanding position, the Forum renewed its call for the establishment of State Police, describing it as a constitutional necessity for effective grassroots security.
Other resolutions include a unified Resident Identification Programme, stronger support for regional and community security outfits, tighter regulation of land administration and mining activities, and institutional strengthening of traditional councils.
The leaders urged all Southern states to formally incorporate traditional rulers into their security councils, noting their crucial role in intelligence gathering, early warning, and community engagement.
The Forum reaffirmed its resolve to safeguard lives and property through collaboration among state governments, traditional institutions, and federal security agencies.
