Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has criticised a proposal by a member of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, calling for the execution of repentant terrorists and criminals instead of rehabilitating them.
Gumi, in a Facebook post on Friday, described the proposal as contrary to both religious teachings and international law.
According to him, executing repentant insurgents, secessionists, or prisoners of war would violate established legal and moral principles.
“Killing repentant Insurgents and secessionists is against religious and international law. So also prisoners of war. ICC is listening if you don’t fear Allah,” Gumi said.
The cleric further questioned the moral basis of the proposal, arguing that adopting such an approach would mirror the actions of terrorist groups.
“Where is morality? It’s the same logic terrorists employ to kill all others besides them. Emotions don’t win a war,” he added.
Gumi’s reaction followed comments by Gagdi advocating the execution of repentant terrorists rather than their rehabilitation, a position that has sparked public debate over Nigeria’s approach to tackling insurgency.
