Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected as the new Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), succeeding Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio.
The leadership transition was announced during the ECOWAS Authority meeting, where President Faye formally assumed the rotating chairmanship of the 12-member West African regional bloc.
Faye takes over at a crucial period for ECOWAS as the organisation continues to address regional security challenges, democratic governance, economic integration, and efforts to strengthen cooperation among member states.
The chairmanship of the ECOWAS Authority rotates among the heads of state and government of member countries, with the chairman providing political leadership and guiding the bloc’s agenda during their tenure.
