The Nigerian Senate has directed the National Security Adviser (NSA) to probe the circulation of false reports claiming that Senate President Godswill Akpabio was rushed to a London hospital following a health emergency.

The resolution emerged during Tuesday’s plenary after Senator Titus Zam raised a point of order condemning the spread of such misinformation across media platforms. Senator Zam described the reports as “unacceptable” and urged authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Presiding over the session, Akpabio expressed concern over the difficulty of regulating media content about politicians, describing much of the output on some platforms as “garbage in, garbage out.”

The move comes in response to recent online rumors about Akpabio’s health, which his aides have dismissed as “fake news.”
