The Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University (RSU), Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, has inspected hostel facilities on the university’s main campus ahead of the commencement of the 2026/2027 academic session, assuring students of the administration’s commitment to providing a conducive living environment.
The inspection, conducted on Wednesday, was aimed at assessing the condition of the facilities and identifying areas requiring urgent maintenance before students resume.
The institution said, the inspection team examined critical facilities, including toilets, sewage systems, electrical installations, damaged doors and leaking roofs, to determine their state of readiness for the new academic session.
Prof. Zeb-Obipi acknowledged that achieving perfection in hostel facilities might be difficult but stressed that providing students with basic comfort, safety and a suitable environment remained a priority of his administration.
He added that the exercise also provided an opportunity to assess the preparedness of hostel officers and other personnel ahead of students’ arrival.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the availability of the Head of Hostels and porters demonstrated their readiness to receive students from Sunday, October 18, ahead of the official resumption date of Monday, October 19, 2026.
Prof. Zeb-Obipi was accompanied by the Acting Director of Works, representatives of the Directorates of Student Affairs and Corporate Affairs, hostel porters and the Acting Chief Security Officer.
Beyond hostel preparations, the Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed his administration’s determination to ensure strict compliance with the university’s Senate-approved academic calendar.
He urged both staff and students to align their academic and administrative activities with the approved schedule, insisting that lectures, assignments, semester breaks and examinations must take place as planned.
The Vice-Chancellor said the university would no longer treat adherence to the academic calendar as a mere administrative formality, describing it as essential to academic discipline and institutional efficiency.
He explained that maintaining a predictable academic schedule would enable students to plan their studies, estimate their graduation dates and prepare for life after university, including further education, employment and entrepreneurship.
Prof. Zeb-Obipi warned that disruptions to the academic calendar could create uncertainty and interfere with students’ future plans, adding that consistent adherence to the approved schedule would improve teaching and learning while promoting accountability across the institution.
The RSU Vice-Chancellor also announced that the university portal had been opened for the payment of hostel accommodation fees and school fees.
He urged students to approach their studies with seriousness from the first day of resumption and called on academic and non-academic staff to contribute to the successful implementation of the approved calendar.
He further emphasised that strict compliance with the schedule would ensure that the prescribed curriculum and course content were covered within the stipulated period.
