The Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, has initiated a Drug Integrity Test campaign and inaugurated Drug-Free Ambassadors as part of efforts to promote a healthier and safer campus environment.
The programme, which took place at the university amphitheatre, was spearheaded by the Vice-Chancellor, Isaac Zeb-Obipi.
Carried out in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Department of State Services (DSS), the initiative makes RSU the first university in Nigeria’s South-South region to implement a coordinated and science-based strategy to curb substance abuse.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Zeb-Obipi stated that the policy demonstrates the university’s resolve to address drug abuse at its core. He revealed that all candidates seeking elective positions in student bodies—including the Student Union Government, faculty, departmental and ethnic associations—will be mandated to undergo the Drug Integrity Test to ensure accountability in leadership.
The Vice-Chancellor raised concerns about the rising prevalence of drug abuse among students, noting its damaging effects on their future prospects. He advised students to stay disciplined and committed to their studies.
To support the programme, the university has been equipped with screening facilities by the NDLEA and plans to further reinforce its Anti-Drug Centre. Authorities also reiterated a strict zero-tolerance stance on drug use and trafficking, warning that violators would face legal consequences.
Representing the NDLEA, State Commander Bature Yakubu described the initiative as a preventive measure rather than a punitive one, urging students to view it as a support mechanism. He also stressed the susceptibility of young people to drug abuse and encouraged the ambassadors to set positive examples.
The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education), underscoring RSU’s commitment to fostering a conducive learning environment.
