The Rivers State University (RSU) has commenced the enforcement of its ‘No ID Card, No Entry’ policy for staff, students and visitors as part of efforts to strengthen security on campus.
The enforcement, which commenced on Monday, October 19, 2026, is expected to be continuous, with members of the university’s committee stationed at the institution’s entry points to ensure compliance.
Speaking during the exercise, Dr Theresa Belema Chris-Biriowu, a committee member representing the Directorate of Student Affairs, said the policy was introduced to enable the university to identify everyone on campus at all times for security reasons.
“The idea is that we want to know everybody that is on campus and what they are doing here,” she said.
Dr Belema explained that staff members who forget their identity cards at home would have to return for them or obtain visitor tags, which would prevent them from carrying out their official duties while on campus.
“So if you identify yourself as a staff but you don’t have your ID card, you will have to go back home. If you forget your ID at home, you’re also given the option of seeking the visitor’s tag and if you pick the visitor’s tag, what that means is that you will not be able to perform your official duties,” she added.
Similarly, students without their identity cards may obtain visitor tags but would not be permitted to attend lectures or participate in academic activities in their capacity as students.
“If you take the visitor’s tag, you will not be allowed into the classroom because you are not a student,” she stated.
The committee member stressed that the policy would help the university maintain proper identification and accountability among people entering its premises.
The university said the exercise is aimed at enhancing the security of lives and property within the institution.
