The Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) has attributed waste accumulation in some parts of Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor to operational challenges, contractor failures and indiscriminate dumping.

In a statement by its Head of Media/Advocacy, Harry Henry, on Friday, the agency said it evacuates refuse from over 400 government-approved receptacles daily while maintaining major roads across the two areas.

RIWAMA said it was addressing challenges at affected locations and its dumpsite, while reviewing service providers’ performance and deploying additional equipment.

Residents were urged to report unattended refuse via 07041006992 or WhatsApp 08028339992.

The agency also announced plans for stronger enforcement, waste segregation, smart waste collection and expanded private-sector participation.

RIWAMA assured residents that efforts were ongoing to restore Port Harcourt to its Garden City status.
