In a move to return Port Harcourt to its garden city status, the Acting Sole Administrator of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), Hon Prince Obi Ohia has held a meeting with private service providers (PSP) to discuss the importance of achieving a cleaner environment.
Prince Ohia, who spoke during the interactive session emphasized the need for collective effort in addressing environmental issues, highlighting the vital role of service providers in this endeavor.
He expressed regret over some providers not following agency guidelines, warning that their actions could be counterproductive to the goal of a cleaner environment.
The RIWAMA boss announced new measures to ensure compliance among service providers, including conducting capacity audits of all trucks, sealing trucks with galvanized sheets, and ensuring workers are properly equipped with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
He also stressed the importance of PSP registration and licensing, as well as the certification of dump sites that meet RIWAMA standards.
Warning against dumping in unregistered sites, Ohia urged PSP members to cooperate with the agency in enforcing regulations, including reporting unregistered individuals.
He called on providers to nominate representatives to work closely with RIWAMA for effective collaboration in achieving environmental goals.
The meeting underscored RIWAMA’s commitment to restoring Port Harcourt’s reputation as a garden city, with the agency and private service providers working together towards a cleaner, healthier environment.
