The Rivers State Government states that its drive to establish a sustainable refuse evacuation system is making steady progress, with the construction of two new dump sites at Iriebe and Eneka nearing completion.
The Managing Director of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), Dr. Ibimina Wokoma, disclosed this after inspecting the project sites, where he reviewed the level of work done and discussed expansion plans with the site engineer.
Dr. Wokoma explained that the facilities, provided by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, are designed to improve refuse evacuation efficiency across the state and reduce operational losses associated with waste disposal.
He also announced plans to decommission the existing dumpsite along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road once the new sites become operational. According to him, the old dumpsite will be converted into a green area as part of the state’s environmental renewal efforts.
“We don’t just evacuate refuse, we’re shaping a cleaner future,” Wokoma said during the inspection.
According to RIWAMA, the new dump sites are expected to enhance waste evacuation operations, curb indiscriminate dumping, and reduce environmental risks, resulting in cleaner surroundings and improved public health conditions for residents.
The agency urged residents to comply with approved waste disposal guidelines, including dumping refuse only at designated receptacles between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., avoiding disposal on road medians, and refraining from patronizing cart pushers. It also advised homes, offices, and business premises to engage registered private waste service providers.
