The Rivers State Government has commenced the 2026 Optimized Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week (oMNCHW), a statewide healthcare initiative aimed at improving maternal and child health outcomes through the provision of free medical services.
The week-long programme, which runs from June 8 to June 12, offers services including routine immunization, antenatal care, safe delivery services, nutritional screening, HPV vaccination, HIV screening and counselling, family planning, cervical cancer screening, birth registration, deworming, and blood pressure checks.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony in Port Harcourt, stakeholders urged residents, particularly pregnant women, nursing mothers, and caregivers, to take advantage of the free healthcare services available at designated health facilities across the state.
The initiative is being implemented simultaneously in all 23 local government areas as part of efforts to reduce preventable maternal and child deaths and improve access to quality healthcare services.
