The Rivers State Police Command has announced the commencement of strict enforcement of Operation Velvet across the state from August 17, 2026, to ensure compliance with existing traffic laws and regulations.
The command said the exercise was being implemented in line with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the enforcement became necessary due to the growing disregard for traffic regulations, which has contributed to gridlocks, obstruction of traffic flow and avoidable risks to road users.
The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders to ensure effective enforcement of the operation within their respective areas of responsibility.
The police said traffic offenders would face appropriate sanctions under the law, including arrest, vehicle impoundment and prosecution where necessary.
However, CP Adepoju warned officers deployed for the operation against extortion, harassment, intimidation, abuse of office and other forms of unprofessional conduct.
He directed personnel to carry out their duties professionally and responsibly while respecting the fundamental human rights and dignity of members of the public.
The commissioner further warned that officers found guilty of extortion, brutality, misconduct or abuse of office would face strict disciplinary action.
Adepoju urged motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, motorcyclists and other road users to comply with traffic laws, cooperate with police personnel and avoid actions capable of causing traffic obstruction or endangering lives.
The command also urged members of the public to report traffic-related emergencies, human rights violations, extortion, police misconduct and other incidents requiring urgent intervention through its official complaint and emergency lines
