The Rivers State Government has commended the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for its intervention and support to communities affected by recent flooding in the state.

The commendation was made by the Rivers State Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Flood Prevention and Management Committee, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, during the handover and flag-off of NEMA relief materials at the Agency’s Operations Office in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Represented at the event by the Head of Service, Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. Inyingi Brown, Prof. Odu expressed appreciation to NEMA for its continued efforts to provide assistance to communities affected by disasters across the country.

She said the agency had, over the years, provided relief and guidance to disaster-affected communities, adding that its intervention was particularly important at a time when parts of Rivers State were grappling with the effects of flooding.

“Prof. Odu sent me to appreciate NEMA for the work you are doing and for the help you are giving to people who have suffered different types of disasters,” Brown said on behalf of the Deputy Governor.

The Deputy Governor also called for proper monitoring of the distribution process to ensure that the relief materials reach the intended beneficiaries.

She explained that the State Flood Prevention and Management Committee, established by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, was already coordinating the distribution of relief materials to Local Government Areas affected by the floods.

Prof. Odu further called for stronger collaboration between the Rivers State Government and NEMA, while expressing appreciation to the Director-General of the agency for remembering the state at what she described as a critical time.

Earlier, the Coordinator of NEMA in Rivers and Bayelsa States, Dr. Chidi Ogundu, said the Federal Government, through the agency’s Director-General, had approved the release of relief materials to some flood-affected Local Government Areas in Rivers State.

He said the intervention was aimed at cushioning the impact of the disaster on affected residents and communities.
