The Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry Against Police Brutality on Tuesday ended its sitting in Port Harcourt. Of the total number of petitions heard, the panel excluded 78.
The panel chaired by Retired Justice Chukwunoye Uriri, was inaugurated by Governor Nyesom Wike on October 22, 2020 and commenced work November 24.
The commission was set up in response to the federal government’s call to commission panels to hear cases of police brutality, following the #EndSARS protests that lasted about two weeks last October.
On the night of October 20, 2020, the Nigerian Army allegedly killed dozens of unarmed protesters at the Lekki toll gate. The military has since denied the attack despite several proofs of fatalities recorded by eyewitnesses.
