The Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC), Eastern Zone, has accused the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, of plotting to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The group has vowed to resist any such attempt, warning of serious consequences.
Following a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday, IYC Eastern Zone Chairman, Comrade Ibiso Harry, alleged that former Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is orchestrating the political crisis in the state. According to Harry, Wike, through his allies—including Amaewhule and Tony Okocha—is behind efforts to remove Fubara due to the governor’s refusal to relinquish control of state resources.
“By the bone of contention in the Rivers Crisis is the desperation of Wike to perpetually control the resources of the state both from the Federal and State Internally Generated Revenue which the Governor has objected to, resisted and made it clear that Rivers money is for Rivers people,” he said
Harry also condemned a recent Supreme Court ruling that froze Rivers State’s federal allocation, describing it as an attempt to cripple the state’s economy. He accused Tony Okocha of influencing the ruling and warned that such actions could harm civil servants and the general population.
The IYC chairman insisted that Fubara must be allowed to complete two terms, as previous governors had done, and called for dialogue instead of political maneuvering. He issued a warning that any attempt to remove Fubara would be met with resistance.
Harry also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his intervention in the crisis and urged continued efforts to maintain stability in the state.
Meanwhile, Chairman Emeritus of IYC, Comrade Ibim Ibiwari, claimed that investigations by the group had confirmed the existence of an impeachment plan. He cited statements by Chief Tony Okocha and Hon. Lolo Opuene as evidence of the alleged plot.
Ibiwari reaffirmed the IYC’s commitment to defending Fubara’s administration, recalling the sacrifices made to secure Wike’s second term in office. “We died to make Wike come for second tenure and we will also die to make sure Sim remains in office,” he declared.
