Some residents of Port Harcourt are set to stage a peaceful protest over the rising wave of insecurity and alleged “one-chance” robberies in the Rivers State capital.

The planned protest was announced by media personality Adekunle Adejumo in a video shared on social media, in which he decried what he described as the worsening security situation in the city.

Adejumo said he decided to speak out after he and his driver witnessed the aftermath of an alleged one-chance attack on a young woman. According to him, the victim was thrown out of a moving vehicle close to a popular hotel in Port Harcourt after being assaulted.

He said passersby and other concerned residents quickly mobilised to rescue the woman and take her to the hospital for treatment.

The media personality expressed concern over what he described as a pattern of violent attacks across the city, citing recent incidents, including the stabbing of a young man in Rumuokoro and the reported death of a woman who was allegedly pushed from a moving vehicle around the Air Force area.

Adejumo criticised the Rivers State Government over what he alleged was its failure to tackle the growing insecurity, insisting that protecting lives and property remains the primary responsibility of any government.

“Right now, Port Harcourt is a scene of crime. I’ve never seen a government that is this worse, because the primary objective of every government, even to the child that has just gotten admission into secondary school, is to protect lives and property, and that is not happening,” he said.

He urged the state government to strengthen the regulation of commercial transport by registering operators and ensuring that commercial buses are properly identified with traceable numbers to help curb criminal activities.

Adejumo also confirmed that he would participate in the planned peaceful protest, calling on residents to unite in demanding urgent action to improve security across the state.

“The protest that is coming must happen. I will be there. Let’s save Rivers people. One-chance incidents are getting out of hand,” he said.

The planned demonstration comes amid growing public concern over reported cases of one-chance robberies, assaults and other violent crimes in parts of Port Harcourt, with residents urging security agencies and the state government to take decisive steps to restore public safety.
