The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, over allegations of forgery, cyberstalking, and other offences currently under investigation.
Force spokesperson DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said in a statement on Friday that Sowore’s arrest was carried out in compliance with legal procedures, constitutional safeguards, and due process. He noted that the activist was released on bail within the constitutionally required 48-hour period, in line with Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution, and is expected to appear in court in the coming days.
Adejobi dismissed reports that Sowore was tortured while in custody, describing the claims as false and misleading. According to the police, a viral image showing the activist with a bandaged arm was misrepresented, as the bandage was allegedly in his possession before his arrest. The statement added that the Inspector-General of Police ordered an internal probe after Sowore was seen wearing the bandage in detention, especially since he had twice refused medical examinations by independent police medical teams on 7th and 8th August.
The police further stressed that Sowore’s detention is backed by a valid court order and not politically motivated. The Force urged the media and the public to avoid sensational reporting and reiterated its commitment to human rights, the rule of law, and impartial justice.
