2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has donated ₦15 million to the Dental Students Association of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), in response to a ₦40 million appeal for laboratory upgrades crucial to their re-accreditation process.
Obi disclosed that he received a formal request from the association earlier in the week, seeking urgent financial assistance to scale up their facilities and increase their graduation and induction quota. He said he delayed his response out of respect for the national mourning declared over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Speaking during a visit to the university, Obi lamented the persistent failure of leadership in addressing key developmental sectors, particularly education and healthcare.
“We cannot, in good conscience, continue to allow our young people to suffer due to leadership failure,” Obi said. “It is tragic that while public servants spend millions on luxury cars, critical sectors like health and education are left to rot.”
He described the situation as a “tragedy of misplaced priorities,” stressing that billions spent on non-essential infrastructure like conference centres and bus parks could be better invested in lifting citizens out of poverty and securing the nation’s future.
Obi reaffirmed his commitment to supporting youth development, adding that Nigeria must urgently refocus national resources on education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.
