A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that it will not support the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027, describing calls for opposition candidates to support the President as a threat to electoral democracy.
The party stated this in a press statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary of the Interim National Working Committee, Comrade Ini Ememobong, on October 20, 2026.
The statement was in response to comments credited to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, urging PDP candidates to collapse their political structures and support Tinubu’s re-election.
The PDP said the message was not directed at genuine members of the party but at individuals who, according to it, were pretending to belong to the opposition while working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
It maintained that its “true and principled members” would not support what it described as the self-serving agenda of the APC-led Federal Government and its policies.
According to the party, the primary responsibility of the opposition is to provide an alternative to the incumbent government rather than support its re-election.
It added that any alliance among opposition parties should be formed among themselves and not with the ruling party.
The PDP also criticised the proposed “rainbow coalition,” describing it as a threat to electoral democracy and warning that it could push Nigeria towards what it called an “electoral monarchy.”
The party urged its members to remain steadfast while awaiting the outcome of its legal battle at the Court of Appeal, expressing hope that the judiciary would return the party to what it described as its rightful owners.
“Our case at the Court of Appeal has been heard, and we await judgment,” the statement said, adding that justice delayed was justice denied.
The PDP further cautioned Nigerians against what it described as elite accommodation and state capture disguised as broad-based political collaboration.
It called on Nigerians to use the 2027 general elections as an opportunity to vote out political actors it accused of being insensitive and irresponsible.
