The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed claims that it conducted its South-South Zonal Congress, stating that a recent gathering in Calabar, Cross River State, was not an official party event.
In a statement released on Saturday, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) clarified that it had postponed the congress, originally scheduled for February 22, to allow for further consultations. The decision was made during an NWC meeting on February 20, in line with the PDP Constitution.
Citing Sections 29 (2)(b) and 31 (2)(c) and (j) of the party’s constitution, the NWC reiterated that it has the authority to act on behalf of the National Executive Committee in emergencies and regulate party elections. The PDP emphasized that no new date has been set for the South South Zonal Congress and urged party members, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the media to disregard any claims suggesting otherwise.
The NWC also commended PDP governors, leaders, and stakeholders in the South South for their continued loyalty and commitment to the party’s unity and stability. A new date for the congress will be announced through official channels.
