The Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC, yesterday, demolished make shift houses and markets close to the Mile 1 rail track, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The make shift structures were demolished, following the construction of the Port Harcourt to Maiduguri narrow gauge line.
A representative of the company handling the project, said the traders encroached on the rail tracks.
According to him, the law stipulates that nothing should be close to the rail tracks by 15 meters, adding that only houses that encroached on the tracks were demolished.
The rail line is expected to link Nigeria’s industrial and agriculture hubs, facilitating the easy movement of people, goods and services. When completed, it will connect Rivers, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe and Borno states.
