The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has called for stronger collaboration with the police and other security agencies to ensure safe and inclusive electoral participation for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
Amupitan made the call on Friday during a technical engagement on disability-inclusive election security and protection protocols in Abuja.
He stressed that every eligible citizen must be able to vote freely and safely without discrimination, intimidation or harassment.
The INEC Chairman urged security agencies to integrate disability inclusion into election planning, personnel training and security deployment, while ensuring accessible polling units and prompt responses to threats.
He also called for stronger coordination among INEC, security agencies and Organisations of Persons with Disabilities to protect voters throughout the electoral process, from registration to the post-election period.
Amupitan reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that disability, insecurity and avoidable institutional barriers do not prevent eligible Nigerians from exercising their voting rights ahead of the 2027 elections.
