The Nigerian Army has unveiled plans to recruit and train an additional 28,000 soldiers to enhance its operational capacity and intensify efforts to combat insecurity across the country.
The Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, made the announcement on Friday during a press briefing in Abuja ahead of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration.
Represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Bamidele Alabi, the army chief said the expansion follows the establishment of a new recruit training depot at Amasiri Edda, which now serves as the Nigerian Army’s third training institution.
According to him, the additional facility will significantly increase the Army’s recruitment and training capacity, enabling it to induct 28,000 more troops to reinforce ongoing security operations nationwide.
Shaibu emphasized that personnel are as vital as military equipment in tackling insecurity, noting that the initiative is aimed at strengthening the Army’s manpower to better address emerging security challenges.
