The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says more than 65,000 suspected cases of cholera have been recorded across 35 states and about 195 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Nigeria this year.

The NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, disclosed this while highlighting the country’s ongoing response to cholera and other disease outbreaks.

Idris said Enugu State remains the only state that has not reported a cholera case so far this year.

According to him, the state’s situation is largely attributed to proactive measures implemented by the Enugu State Government to prevent and contain the disease.

The NCDC chief, however, expressed concern about the level of preparedness and response to disease outbreaks in some states.

He noted that inadequate or delayed responses by certain state authorities were undermining efforts to effectively control outbreaks.

Idris stressed the need for state governments to take full ownership of public health emergencies and act swiftly whenever disease cases are detected.

He said timely intervention and stronger collaboration between state authorities and health agencies were essential to preventing outbreaks from escalating.
