The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Rivers State, has called for immediate justice following the killing of Miss Aruwa Favour Habibatu, a final-year Law student of the University of Port Harcourt.
Habibatu was reportedly murdered by her boyfriend a few weeks ago, an incident that sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection of women and students.
In a press release issued on June 25, 2026, and signed by the Chairman of NANS JCC Rivers State, Comrade Anunobi Godswill, the student body expressed anger, grief, and outrage over what it described as the gruesome murder of the student.
According to the statement, the death of Habibatu is not only a loss to her family but also a tragedy for the entire Nigerian student community.
“The untimely and tragic death of this promising student is not only an attack on her family but an attack on the entire Nigerian student community,” the statement read.
While acknowledging reports that the prime suspect has been apprehended, NANS stressed that the arrest alone is insufficient, insisting that the authorities must ensure swift, transparent, and uncompromising justice.
The organisation placed security agencies and prosecuting authorities on notice, warning that students across the country are closely monitoring the case and demanding that all individuals connected to the crime be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.
NANS also called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, the Attorney-General of Delta State, and other relevant authorities to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done.
The student body vowed to monitor every stage of the investigation and prosecution process, stating that it would take all lawful and democratic actions necessary to ensure accountability.
Expressing solidarity with the bereaved family, NANS assured students across Rivers State and Nigeria that their voices would be heard in the pursuit of justice.
“The life of Aruwa Favour Habibatu mattered. Her dreams mattered. Her future mattered. We demand justice, nothing less,” the statement concluded.
