Maryam Abacha, widow of former Nigerian military ruler General Sani Abacha, has publicly refuted long-standing allegations that her husband looted the nation’s treasury, claiming instead that funds allegedly linked to him were saved for Nigeria and disappeared after his death.
In a recent televised interview with TVC, Abacha questioned the credibility of the so-called “Abacha loot,” demanding verifiable evidence or eyewitness accounts to back up the accusations.
“Who is the witness of the monies that were being stashed? Did you see the signature or the evidence of any monies stashed abroad?” she asked.
Successive Nigerian administrations have disclosed the recovery of more than $3.6 billion in assets allegedly stashed abroad by Abacha and his associates. The United Kingdom, United States, and France have repatriated large sums to Nigeria, officially labeling them proceeds of corruption.
However, Maryam Abacha dismissed these claims, maintaining that the money her husband reportedly kept for the country vanished following his death in June 1998.
