The Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Sir Allwell Ihunda says more than 500 manhole covers have been stolen in the city.
The Mayor, who made this known in a statement today, condemned the act, describing it as worrisome.
He said it is shocking that people could steal manhole covers despite knowing its importance.
He warned those involved in the act to desist as anyone found wanting will be dealt with.
Residents of Port Harcourt had recently raised an alarm over the act, as they called on relevant authorities to take measures to end the menace.
