The Rivers State Ministry of Water Resources and Rural Development has extended the deadline for the registration of private boreholes in the state to one year. The ministry has said the registration of boreholes in the state is to ensure that water being consumed by residents of the state is of good quality.
The state Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Tamunosisi Gogo Jaja disclosed this during a meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools in the state, yesterday.
He said, proprietors are to ensure that their schools have standard boreholes with portable water that is safe for consumption, as the government will not allow substandard boreholes in schools. This is as schools prepare to reopen after the long hiatus occasioned by the COVID-19.
Dr. Jaja equally confirmed that owners of commercial boreholes in the state have two months left to ensure that their boreholes are duly registered with the ministry.
He warned that the state government will not fail to prosecute anyone who fails to comply with the directives after the expiration of the deadline, as the ministry is out to ensure what is served Rivers people as water is safe for consumption.
