Heads of media organizations in the country have cautioned the Federal Government against gagging the media, advising them to address the security challenges in the country instead.
This was in reaction to the directive of the National Broadcasting Commission that media houses should not disclose the details of the activities of terrorists.
They stated that the media will not be deterred by such directive, adding that they report activities of bandits and terrorists and does not create such events.
President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Isiguzo in his statement said: “This latest directive must be reviewed by the commission. The NBC must also ensure that its actions are in line with international best practices and must conform with time-tested models from other nations.”
On his part, Executive Director, Centre for Law and Advocacy, Richard Akinnola said: “It is quite unfortunate but it is difficult to gag the Nigerian Press going by its history, no matter the extrajudicial means.”
“The government has failed in the aspect of insecurity and this is a subtle effort to cover the inadequacy of the government,” he added.
