The Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Allwell Ihunda, has officially flagged off a four-day free medical outreach programme aimed at improving access to healthcare for residents.
The programme, which commenced on Friday, is being held at the council secretariat and is part of the mayor’s efforts to fulfil a key campaign promise made to the people.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Ihunda expressed gratitude for the successful implementation of the initiative, noting that it was conceived during his first tenure in office. He explained that the outreach is designed to cater to over 5,000 residents within the local government area and beyond.
“This outreach is a fulfilment of our commitment to prioritize the health and wellbeing of our people. We strongly believe that a healthy population is the foundation for sustainable development,” he said.
The mayor revealed that the programme has already attracted beneficiaries from within and outside Rivers State, owing to widespread publicity. According to him, more than 1,830 individuals have received various forms of medical care since the initiative began.
He added that patients requiring advanced treatment beyond the scope of the outreach are being referred to appropriate government health facilities, with the council providing financial support to ease their burden.
Ihunda reiterated his administration’s commitment to sustaining free medical outreach programmes, stressing that no resident should be denied access to quality healthcare due to financial constraints.
The outreach is expected to continue over the next four days, providing essential medical services to residents.
