Acting MD of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Ibrahim Odumboni has denied rumours making the rounds that sweepers are being owed six months salaries, dismissing it as fake news.
The LAWMA boss in a chat with Journalists over the recent protest by highway sweepers, accusing LAWMA of maltreatment and unpaid salaries, said that they got reports that the contractors in charge of sweepers were not meeting their obligations to them.
Ibrahim equally confirmed that the contractors were underpaying the sweepers and that so many of them were involved in sharp practices by padding up their bills with ghost sweepers and supervisors.
“Worse still, they were underpaying them. Some contractors were paying the hardworking sweepers N5,000; N12,000; N15000; and N18,500 monthly whilst the state approves N25,000 for each sweeper and N40,000 for supervisors,” he asserted.
He said a lot of measures will be put in place to address the issue as they will not be distracted by such campaign of lies and blackmail.
Few days ago LAWMA road sweepers carried out a state wide protests over unpaid salaries and outright maltreatment by the agency.
