The Institute of Pollution Studies (IPS) at Rivers State University has marked a major milestone in environmental research with the unveiling of a comprehensive map of petrol filling stations in Port Harcourt Municipality, alongside the launch of an innovative groundwater protection campaign.
The initiative, revealed on Wednesday, aims to strengthen efforts to safeguard groundwater resources in Rivers State and the wider Niger Delta region. The newly developed map offers critical data for environmental monitoring, urban planning, and regulatory oversight, positioning RSU as a leader in sustainable environmental management.
As part of the campaign, IPS introduced a scientific “Bucket Experiment” to examine the effects of buried municipal waste on groundwater quality. The study is expected to generate evidence-based insights to improve waste management systems and encourage the adoption of engineered landfill solutions across the region.
Speaking at the event, IPS Director Prof. C. L. Eze emphasized the Institute’s commitment to advancing environmental protection through research, stakeholder engagement, and strategic partnerships. He noted that the mapping exercise and groundwater study will enhance policy advocacy, raise environmental awareness, and contribute to sustainable development in the Niger Delta.
Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, Vice-Chancellor of the University, commended the Institute for its innovation, describing the initiatives as aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He also announced that Prof. Eze will represent RSU at an upcoming international meeting in Kigali, showcasing the Institute’s pioneering work on a global platform.
These initiatives further cement Rivers State University’s reputation as a hub for environmental research excellence and highlight its commitment to promoting sustainable development, public health, and ecological resilience across Rivers State and the Niger Delta region
