The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks, giving eligible Nigerians more time to register ahead of future elections.
The Commission announced that the exercise, which began on August 18, 2025 and was initially scheduled to end on July 10, 2026, will now conclude on Sunday, July 26, 2026.
According to a press release signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the decision followed a review of the exercise and feedback received from INEC state offices, political parties, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders.
INEC said the extension reflects its commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the National Register of Voters.
The Commission also announced the introduction of a self-service online voter registration platform for eligible first-time voters as part of efforts to improve accessibility and service delivery.
The new online registration option will become available from Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through INEC’s dedicated CVR portal, where applicants can also access a step-by-step registration guide.
According to the Commission, the self-service platform will enable eligible citizens to initiate and complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without the need to physically visit an INEC office.
INEC stated that the system is equipped with robust identity verification, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks to safeguard the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
The Commission urged all eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the extended registration period and the new online registration option.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a credible, inclusive, and accessible voter registration process while leveraging technology to enhance citizens’ participation in the electoral process.
