The Community Development Chairman of Igwuruta, Lucky Matthew, has confirmed the killing of a youth leader and Secretary of Omuolu village in Omuwei community, Nchelem Festus during a clash with suspected Northern youths.
According to Mr Matthew, the incident occurred last night after two suspected motorcycle thieves were caught bringing a stolen bike into the community. The suspects were handed over to the local security, OSPAC, and were being escorted to the police station when a group of youths, believed to be Northerners, intercepted them and attacked the team.
“The suspects were handed over to OSPAC and were being taken to the police station when some Hausa youths intercepted the vehicle and attacked the group. Sadly, during the confrontation, an innocent Omuolu boy who was among those assisting to hand over the suspects was killed,” Lucky said.
He added that the incident has heightened tensions in the community and called for the immediate deployment of security personnel to restore order.
Social commentator and media personality Amb. Victor Nyeche also confirmed the attack. He explained that when community youths refused to release the apprehended suspects as demanded by the Northern youths, the group ambushed them on motorcycles and fatally stabbed the Omuolu Secretary before fleeing the scene.
He noted that Several others, including OSPAC officials, were injured, sparking panic in the community. The two suspects remain in police custody.
The police have yet to issue an official statement, and attempts to reach the Police spokesperson were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
