Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has attributed the increase in Nigeria’s oil revenue to the Nigerian Army’s sustained operations against crude oil theft and other criminal activities, saying the military has played a vital role in protecting the nation’s economic assets.
Fubara made the remarks on Friday while receiving the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, during a courtesy visit ahead of the Nigerian Army’s 163rd Anniversary Celebration, which will be hosted in Rivers State.
The governor commended the Army for its efforts in safeguarding critical oil and gas infrastructure, noting that the clampdown on crude oil theft and illegal bunkering had significantly improved crude oil production and increased revenue accruing to the country.
He also praised the Army Chief’s leadership in strengthening national security and improving the welfare of officers and soldiers, expressing confidence that the Nigerian Army would continue to fulfil its constitutional mandate of defending the country’s territorial integrity and maintaining internal security.
Fubara said the decision to stage the Army’s 163rd Anniversary Celebration in Rivers State, despite recent security concerns in parts of the state, demonstrates that Rivers remains peaceful, stable and safe for major national events.
He assured the Nigerian Army and other security agencies of his administration’s continued support, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.
“We will continue to partner with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to ensure lasting peace, security and economic growth in Rivers State and Nigeria as a whole,” the governor said.
Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said he was in Rivers State as part of activities marking the Nigerian Army’s 163rd Anniversary Celebration.
He disclosed that the event would attract Chiefs of Army Staff from 21 African countries, two former Nigerian Presidents, Vice President Kashim Shettima and other distinguished guests.
