MEDITATION SCRIPTURE: “Now when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid upon the Negeh and upon Ziklag, and burn it with fire.” 1 Sam.30:1
READ: 1 SAM. 30:1-5
David and his men reached Ziklag on the third day. Now the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag and burned it, 2 and had taken captive the women and everyone else in it, both young and old. They killed none of them, but carried them off as they went on their way. 3 When David and his men reached Ziklag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. 4 So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep. 5 David’s two wives had been captured— Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel.
This was the first time we read about David accepting to go into battle without inquiring from the Lord. Well, the motive of David in this battle was not disclosed, but permits me to say that it might be treacherous. From all that had happened between Saul and David, how he spared Saul’s life at two different occasions when he had the opportunity to kill him, you will agree with me that David had no intention of killing Saul or any of his sons or even any Israelite because he knew the covenant. It may be that assumptions of the lords of the Philistines were correct.
It is possible David had planned to use this occasion once again to prove to Saul, his sons and all Israel that he had no wicked intentions concerning Saul and his father land. But God had intended to end David’s misery with this battle. By the intervention of the lords of the Philistines, David was sent back to his camp Ziklag. On his returned he discovered that there has been a raid. Any journey embarked upon without God endorsement is bound to end in pains and regrets. Have you imagined why David’s men; his loyal friends were so furious that they even wanted to stone him? It is possible that some of them may have warned him against this journey but he insisted as the leader. When you venture into any project without God’s direction, there is bound to be disappointment and pains.
TURNING POINT: When you venture into any project without God’s direction, there is bound to be disappointment and pains.
PRAYER POINT: Lord, help me to walk with You always.
