MEDITATION SCRIPTURE: “And fell down on his feet at his feet, giving him thanks and he was a Samaritan” (Lk.17:16).
READ: LK.17:12-19
12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: 13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. 14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. 17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. 19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
The emphasis of our focal scripture on the identity of the Leper who came to show his gratitude to the master, “and he was a Samaritan”, speaks volumes. In His response, Jesus called this Samaritan a stranger. Meaning that he was not a Jew, he didn’t have the laws of Moses. He didn’t attend the synagogue worship every Sabbath. He knew nothing about the Jews ceremonial laws regarding the cleansing of a Leper and the stipulated sacrifices (Lev.4:3-10), yet when he saw that he was healed, he could not hold it unto himself, he rushed back to the Lord with a heart full of gratitude to appreciate the goodness and faithfulness of God.
Just like the rest of the nine Lepers that never returned to give thanks, many of us take God and His blessings for granted. This is so much to be grateful for. Life, health, divine protection, favour, mercy, grace etc are great treasures that money cannot buy. Recently I heard the story of someone who was brushing her teeth in the morning, got chucked with toothpaste and before her family could take her to the hospital, she was dead. There are blessings you enjoy freely that have been on the prayer list of some people for several years. Satan packages ingratitude in the envelope called self-pity, filled with unanswered prayers, disappointments, unfulfilled desires, trouble of life etc. The simplest way to cure this disease is to change the label on the envelope to joyful, hope, and replace the content with praise and worship, acknowledging all that God has done already. Anytime Satan come to trigger off ingratitude in your heart with the picture of those who are better than you, silence him by showing him the pictures of those you are better than.
TURNING POINT: Anytime Satan come to trigger off ingratitude in your heart with the picture of those who are better than you, silence him by showing him the pictures of those you are better than.
PRAYER POINT: Father, help me to serve You with a heart of gratitude
